The countdown begins

12th Mar 2007

What a week… Work has been nuts and along with the usual line-up of “things-I-do-for-people-in-my-free-time” (TIDFPIMFR anyone??? :P), getting things done on the new site is taking a little longer than usual. However, I decided to be a little selfish over the weekend and did get quite a bit done.

One of my key goals with this design was to use scrict XHMTL with as close to true symantics as I could. While it made developing for Safari, Firefox and Opera a breeze, it meant that the ‘ol IE testing procedure took about twice as long (and boy was it painful).

Other aspects of this design involve a lot of SEO work. I am tired of googling my name and finding myself about 5 pages in (booo!!!), so we’ll see how we fare after my modifications. I also wanted to lose the 90’s style splash page, which is pretty much as close to stupid and annoying as you can get (What the heck was a thinking???). Finally, I have been keeping a close eye on my Analytics account and I actually don’t even have one person viewing this site anything under a 1024 resolution - so the new design will be a 960 fixed-width layout.

So anyway, internal geekery aside, all that is left to do is take all my posts/comments from wordpress and put them into the new blogging system “Simplelog“. This neat little RoR app, while still young, is a joy to template I can tell you. I came across it via Garret Dimon’s blog and was impressed by how little it had.

Honestly, I wouldn’t say that Simplelog is better than Wordpress by any measure of the scale, but it was just a neat little app and I wanted to get more of my digital life running on Ruby.

After that, there’s only one thing left to do; Test, test and test again! I’m keen to do things right by this new design and I would love anyone out there who’s willing to go over it with a fine-tooth comb and help me track down all the pesky bugs.

Due to this and the other growing number of things I have to do this week, I’m pushing back the (very rough) launch date to sometime NEXT week.

I haven’t even of late had a chance to start on any of my TIDFPIMFR :P

Can’t wait to see the new design as I really love the work you do and I think I might have to make the step soon as well to go to the 1024 resolution base for my blog but cant wait to make the same jump in the business, but it’s still taking a while for those world stats to change!
