Side stepping
Monday the 23rd of October, was the day that SM2 interviewed AND hired a new designer who will be joining our humble team in no less than 2 weeks. This is quite exciting and relieving as we have taken on some very big/interesting projects, which require a lot of custom programming.
So why hire a designer? Well, you may recall that I originally applied for a developer job with SM2 and was quickly snapped up to do design and multimedia development as I wasn’t very familiar with Joomla! and management felt I was a fish worth keeping. Due, to our recent high-demand for programming and my 10-month learning curve with Joomla! I am now at the point where I can use the framework fairly proficiently, hence my new title “Developer”.
To be honest, I was getting a little warn out with design. While I think I can create a look that is widely acceptable and easy on the eye, I don’t consider myself an amazing designer and I have definitely started to reach the ceiling of my capability.
Development on the other hand has been something I have been interested in for a LONG time, well before I was introduced to Photoshop. And with all the development work I have been doing on some recent projects, I think it showed my bosses that I was ready to take the step across to the geeky-er side of town.
So, I’m excited! They say a change is as good as a holiday and considering I haven’t had one of those in a year, I’m feeling pretty good. The new designer is a friend of Michaela’s that I was introduced to a while ago and he is definitely one very talented individual, so I’m excited to see what will come out of the SM2 camp in the near future.
Unfortunately, I will still occasionally need to use Photoshop, so I can’t join the linux fan club with the other two developers (though I believe Adobe are working on a linux version), but I’m sure I’ll live through it…
