I don’t value my own work

17th May 2007

Today our designer at work put together a really beautiful looking mockup for one of our clients. It was just one of those simple, sophisticated; “Yum” designs that you wish you’d done yourself… Jokingly, as I was walking out the door, I asked if he would design something like that for my blog. In reply (and also in jest) he said that for $2500; SURE! I laughed and went off to lunch.

The point of the story though, is this: I laughed because I would never pay $2500 for a website design.

It was quite a shocking realisation, considering that building websites is what pays my bills. But, the obvious truth is that I wouldn’t pay, because I could just as easily whip up a design myself. Perhaps not on par with Marks’ work, but a design none-the-less.

Regardless of the reasoning, I still wouldn’t pay; yet that is exactly what I would expect of a client.

Hehehe… I know that’s a little random, but I thought it deserved a blog-post. Gotta love a good paradox once in a while. ;-)

I know exactly what you mean by can’t justify it at that much. But remember we are being for our skills and advice as well. Sure it may not take us that long to do, but to have got that level and that degree of quality of work that is what we are being paid for ;)
