Feeling the virb
I have been one of the lucky individuals testing unborn media’s new product “virb” over the last week. This extremely social butterfly is a breathtakingly AWESOME product.
Do you ever look at Myspace and think “If this was done properly this would be a really great place to be”?
A few people love it, a lot think it’s okay and then there’s the rest of us who just can’t stand looking at puke for prolonged periods of time.
I have long had a secret desire for a space of my own with all the social networking goodness, but could never bring myself to signing up to the farce we all know as Myspace. Enter virb…
This peice of beauty is everything that Myspace SHOULD have been and more. I would love so much to put up some screenshots so all may see what I mean, but I fear being kicked out of the beta… :(
When they do finally release it to the public be sure to add me.
So, what’s so great about virb then? Well, aside being lovingly hand-crafted by the world famous Ryan Sims (of Purevolume fame) it has a number of very cool features. One of which is customisation.
If you’ve ever spent much time with Myspace, you’ll know that customising your profile is like trying to put a golf ball inside a watermellon without breaking the skin. Okay, perhaps a slight over-exaduration there, but the point is obvious; IT’S HELL MESSY!
Virb offers 2 levels of customisation; Basic, which allows you to set the background colour etc etc and Advanced, which gives you full access to the CSS file (WOOHOO!!!). You can also move the different modules around the page and even create your own custom modules (flickr import etc).
Another very cool feature that will be coming to an iTunes near you is VirbTunes - a plugin for iTunes which keeps your profile up to date with what you’re listening to. I can’t really say much about this one at time of writing as we don’t have access to it just yet, but the concept sounds promising and will no doubt spawn a series of similar plugins and features.
While virb is about as featuresque as Myspace, the fact the it’s put together so well just creates an extremely inviting atmosphere and makes for a very fulfilling experience. I think I have finally found a space to call my own, which I hope to share with you in the near future! ;-)
“It’s mabo, it’s the virb… Yeah, it’s just the virb!”

- There’s going to be more features added that are going to way out do MySpace
Please post some screenshots for those of us not in the beta! See flickr http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=virb - there are already a few screenshots, some by Brad Smith who works for UMI/Virb, and some by VIRB testers.

Found this through your virb blog. Cool article! I think it kicks ass as well and I wrote a similar article.
