Depressed by the pace

4th Nov 2006

I’ve started to notice of late that some of my favourite websites are either suddenly disappearing or just aren’t being updated like they used to. In particular, I think of sites like:

These sites (particularly Transparent Bridge) and few others have been close to my heart ever since I discovered them and I have loyally revisited many at least once a month in hope of new and exciting content. Alas, I am often greeted by disappointingly old content or a notice saying that the domain is no longer in use. It’s one thing to be out of date, but to expire and disappear altogether is extremely saddening.

Pondering this reminds me how temporary everything is on the net. We live in the most rapidly evolving community ever to exist and if you can’t keep up, you might just disappear into thin air.

I was talking to a fellow master of webs tonight who was saying that he can’t wait to get out of the industry. While I can understand his particular situation, it made me sad to think that someone with such capability was no longer going to be in the field I hold so dear.

It’s all very cruel at times, very “survival of the fittest”; No one ever stops to remember; There are no memorials, or plaques of days gone by; No inheritances or “Mothers pearls” to pass on to the next generation.

As I write this, I realise this is an unusual thought process; To be depressed by the pace at which the web rolls by; Especially for a guy who is quick to rid his life of old and only owns bare-essential items. But, it was just a thought I had tonight and something that I have never seen written about.

You only have to look to obvious things like the Pyramids of Egypt to see the legacy left by a men (and women) who have been long dead - yet standing as a strong reminder are these incredible monuments living on through the centuries.

So, to all those who have come before me: I SOLUTE THEE! To all those not updating their sites, shame on you. (:P) And to those who are leaving the brotherhood - thanks for playing a part, you’re efforts were appreciated and noticed by many!
