My brain just exploded

29th Dec 2007

There’s nothing like a good revelation and I just had an absolute doozy… I was explaining to my cousins how I can be a bit undecided whether to go for first or second gear in the Mazda, because it’s such a low-ratio gear I often times say to myself:

I may as well just throw it in second, ’cause I’m going to be in second in a second anyway.

And then it hit me… “Second” (the word) has two meanings; It identifies a numeric position (First, Second, Third…) and is also a time measurement (30 seconds, etc).

At the time of my brain-explosion I was dropping my cousins back to their home away from home (they live in Sydney) who speak fluent French and they said that the same word in-fact has three meanings in France; the same two I just identified and a third - which essentially means two years before university (Grade 11).

I don’t know about you, but I feel smarter… :P

Take a break

26th Dec 2007

As I sit here in the spa/pool area of Cedar Lake Resort, soaking up the beautiful weather and looking out over the lake filled with blossoming lilies, I find myself yet again on the CI forums. I’ve abstained from posting or replying to anything, but when someone posted a link to a CI related questionnaire, I just couldn’t help myself.

Alright, enough of this… Back to holidaying. Hope you all had a sweet Christmas and if not, you should try and make up for it by having an unforgettable new years. See you in 2008 people!

My top 5 PHP tips and tricks

7th Dec 2007

As we grow up we expand our vocabulary more and more. In fact, we will keep learning until the day we die, as not many of us will ever have a firm grasp on every word in our native tongue.

This fact very much applies to programmers, especially web-developers, who have to learn multiple languages to get anything done. This makes it very hard for us to truly master any one single language.

Even though I’ve only been developing in PHP for around 5 years, I have come to learn a few little tricks that I wish someone had taught me way back in the beginning. One, some or more of these may be old news to you, but I hope someone finds them helpful. Oh and feel free to chime in if you would like to add to this (very small) list. (more…)
